Walk 20th November 2011

Gate Inn Calendar 2011Posted by Bob Simpson Mon, November 21, 2011 09:45:51

Five walkers set off from the Gate on a grey misty morning. We walked via Owler Carr Wood to Coal Aston and then headed over to Bowshaw and up to the edge of Dore & Totley Golf Course.

The aurumn colours were outstanding with many leaves still on the trees even now towards the end of November.

On leaving the golf course at Bradway we took the public footpath through the car park of the now boarded up Bradway Pub (very sad), crossed the recreation ground, through the woods to the edge of Abbeydale Golf Course.

A couple of hundred yards down the lane we rejoined the golf course via the main enterance and followed the public footpath through Ladies' Spring Wood to Beauchief Golf Course.

The sky was blue with a bright sun and great views over to Millhouses and beyond.

Crossing Bocking Lane into the woods at Bole Hill we were soon at Meadowhead where we crossed into Greaves Park and made our way the cafe` - sandwich and drinks time!

What a change back to mist and no sun; time of zip up coats for the walk back down the Moss Valley via Hazelbarrow Farm and Long Wood to Troway.

No sun but back to the wonderful colours of the mild 2011 very late autumn.

Back at the Gate boots off and time for a pint.

We are looking at having a shorter Festive Walk of about 5/6 miles starting at the Gate Inn at 10.00 am Tuesday 27th December 2011. All welcome - look out for more information.

Cheers - Bob.

Walk Sunday 23rd October 2011

Gate Inn Calendar 2011Posted by Bob Simpson Mon, October 24, 2011 08:28:49
We had a prompt start on a good walking day, grey sky early on, fine with a slight wind on the high ground.

Walking via Bramley, Back Lane, the edge of High Bramley Wood and Ince Piece Wood we soon reached Eckington for a short refreshment stop at the benches near the Church.

To the sound of the bells we retraced our steps along Gas House Lane. Skirting Lady Bank Wood we made our way into Mosborough Village via the Captain, through the Lamb Setts and then up Bridle Stile to Ridgeway Village.

Following Robinbrook Lane we walked via little Carterhall Wood and Bullock Storth, along paths through meadows and arable land to Lightwood Lane.

A short spell on the tarmac up the Lane saw us at the footpath over the fields down to Newfield Spring Wood and Bridle Road Wood.

On route we enjoyed a short lunch break in a wooded area.

Reaching the banks of the Moss we followed the Bridle Path upto Owler Carr Lane where we turned right upto Sicklebrook Farm. The path just above the farm on the left took us through the woods to the stone stile opposite the Gate Inn.

Our timely arrival at 12.55 pm allowed ample time for liquid refreshment and recollections of the walk.

Distance: just over 10 mles

Time: 4 hours 55 minutes

Next Walk: Sunday 20th November 8.00 am.

Cheers - Bob Simpson.
